Outstanding Spanish singer and conductor, whose musical career spans nearly 60 years. Born in 1941 in Madrid into a family of zarzuela singers (Spanish musical theatre). He made his opera stage debut in 1959 at the National Opera of Mexico City and has since performed over 130 tenor roles on all the world's leading stages.
He is considered one of the greatest living opera artists. Since 2009, he has switched to baritone repertoire and performed title roles in operas such as "Rigoletto", "Simon Boccanegra", "Macbeth", "Nabucco", "Gianni Schicchi"; he has also sung the roles of Don Carlos in "Ernani", Count di Luna in "Il Trovatore", Miller in "Luisa Miller", Francesco Foscari in "I Due Foscari", Giorgio Germont in "La Traviata", and others.
As a conductor, his repertoire includes operas such as "La Traviata", "Carmen", "Pagliacci", "Tosca", "La Bohème", and others. Domingo's discography includes 99 complete opera recordings featuring him, as well as numerous solo and crossover albums. Author of ten books – mostly autobiographies and works on music. Laureate of nine Grammy Awards, five Latin Grammy Awards, and a host of other prizes. Honorary doctor of many prestigious music academies, holder of the title of Kammersänger of the Vienna State Opera, the Order of the British Empire, the Legion of Honour, and many other awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the two highest civilian honors in the United States.
